PX Ops
In addition to product work, I also lead PX Ops initiatives tasked with building:
A comprehensive research repository
A UI style guide system for Specialty provider-facing products
Design hand-off process improvement
Relevant Experience from Battelle
The following highlights are samples of my work, as most of my projects are highly confidential or restricted.
Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS): Measures Management System (MMS)
Lead UX Designer responsible for the design strategy and usability testing of CMS’s new MMS website.
Worked with the client to establish a design strategy, leveraging the CMS digital design system, to align this new website with their other existing products, and to standardize an approach to the navigational and informational layout of the blueprint content.
Conducted usability testing with end users from the measure development and implementation professional community, comprising of self-assigned and directed-use tasks to evaluate the navigation, templates, and display of the educational and professional resources.
Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS): eCQI Resource Center
Developed the redesign strategy for the eCQI Resource Center, aligning the UI with a complimentary product while making sure to make the site its own distinct appearance.
Conducted focus groups, tree testing and A/B testing comprised of multiple user roles and levels of experience in the measure development community, and insights gathered from the focus groups were broken down into themes by these stratifications.
UX is integrated to each option year by reviewing analytics, identifying stakeholder goals, and an expert review to identify areas for possible improvement, followed by a recommendation of UX activities to evaluate, identify and refine possible solutions.
Neonate Medication Delivery System [Client Redacted]: UI Design, Instructional Materials Design, and Labeling for a Medical Device
Aligned contextual research findings, PRD, MRD, and FDA regulations into a clean, intuitive, graphical user interface.
Worked alongside human factors engineers throughout the development process to create functional designs: from wireframes and interactive prototypes for formative/summative testing, all the way though exporting visual assets, documenting design implementation requirements in the user interface design document (UIDD), and reviewing implementation with the software team.
Project involvement was also extended to the quick start guide attached to the system, as well as the product labeling following. Design solutions incorporated all regulatory required information, in addition to strategic information design for various user groups for the system.
Controllable Force Autoinjector & Performance Capture Software: Prototype & Software Usability Testing
As part of an internal research and development project, our human factors team evaluated the performance of both a newly engineered medical device and performance capturing software.
As a usability analyst, I conducted a usability review of the software prior to the medical device usability test to identify potential usability issues.
A formative study was conducted to test the usability of the instructions for use and autoinjector prototype with a small patient cohort, and I served as the research assistant to document the device performance along with the performance capturing software, responsible for the data capture for the simultaneous tests.
The subsequent report included documentation of observed usability issues, root cause analysis and design recommendations to improve the instructions for use, device design, and software usability and efficiency.

2021 FedHealthIT Innovation Award Winner: CMS Measures Under Consideration Entry/Review Information Tool (CMS MERIT)
Section 3014 of the Affordable Care Act requires the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) establish a Federal pre-rulemaking process for the selection of quality and efficiency measures for HHS use. In support, CMS developed a flexible, user-centered system for the submission and review of quality measure, CMS Measures Under Consideration Entry/Review Information Tool (CMS MERIT). The program offers seamless integration of knowledge management and human-centric design principles with agile methodologies allowing stakeholders to work collaboratively, with less burden, and data integrity.

Dare-to-Dream Medtech Design Challenge: 2014 MDDI Grand Prize Winner, 2015 & 2013 Finalists
Each year, MD+DI invites innovators, entrepreneurs, students, and the broader healthcare community to submit ideas for the medical device of their dreams. The “Dare to Dream” contest asks entrants to envision a new medical device uninhibited by financial or regulatory concerns. In 2013, 2014 and 2015 Battelle developed three medical device concepts designed to push the boundaries of current technology. Battelle won the grand prize in 2014 for the “Conformal ‘Smart Suit’ Wearable Device”: a wearable device is a garment with conformal electronics weaved into the material that, when activated, stiffens to resist the movement of the wearer.
